About Us

Welcome

The Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies (formerly Institute of Petroleum Studies) was established in 2003 in a unique collaboration between the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, the French Petroleum Institute or Institut français du pétrole (IFP), France, and the NNPC/Total E&P Nigeria Limited (now TotalEnergies) Joint Venture to meet the needs of the petroleum industry through a commitment to excellence in training, applied research, continuing education and capacity development.

Our goal is to equip our graduates with a broad array of intellectual and technical competencies to meet the needs of the oil and gas industry. I am proud to note that our graduates are making their marks in the industry within and outside Nigeria.

This is important to us because, through the success of our graduates we strive to attain our vision to become the foremost International Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Geosciences & Technology, Petroleum Economics & Management as well as Petroleum Policy & Strategic Studies.

In collaboration with industry experts, our faculty is active in ongoing research and is committed to providing the training and a conducive learning environment to help you make the most of the education on offer here at the Institute. The IPES welcomes students from all over the world, so no matter your journey – you will discover and prepare for an exciting and rewarding future.

A Multi-disciplinary Approach

The IPES approach embodies the institute's core philosophy, which ensures that young professionals experience the dynamics of the complex value chain of the world of energy, while illustrating the closely interwoven disciplines of the industry.

The main goal of a postgraduate degree from the IPES, is to develop deep knowledge about the industry and engender in students the capacity to apply what is studied to real life cases and be leaders on the global stage. Students are exposed to the connection between different subjects under each of the respective curriculums of the institute.

Practical and Stimulating Learning

At the IPES, research and education are handled by a faculty, mostly at the cutting edge of industry developments and active in highly recognised business research. This ensures that you learn from the very best and enhance your career prospects.

A key philosophy of the programmes at the IPES is to emphasise the link between teaching and qualitative research.

Our curriculum is contemporary and research-intensive, focusing on the dynamic realities of the energy industry and the nature of the complexities to deal with – as new research results brings fresh material, which subjects classroom knowledge to constant review.

This makes teaching and study more efficient and prepares our students for the workplace.
