Admission into the M.Sc. (Petroleum Project Development and Energy Transition Programme) for the 2024/2025 Session

An International MSc Programme.
The Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies (IPES) formerly Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), was established in 2003, as a bold effort to bridge the skills gap between theory of the classroom and the practical and changing needs of the oil and gas industry.

The M.Sc. Petroleum Project Development and Energy Transition programme is an International Collaborative Graduate programme between the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and IFP School, France, and delivered by the IPES funded by the NNPC Limited /TotalEnergies E&P Nigeria Limited Joint Venture.

The programme aims to provide the students with broad-based training required for onshore and offshore oil and gas field development. On completion of the Masters’ Programme, the graduates will among other skills, be able to:

  • Understand the context of Energy Transition.
  • Evaluate and manage oil and gas fields, with the necessary approaches to minimize carbon emissions.
  • Design and supervise the drilling of exploration and development wells and carry out drilling optimization programmes.
  • Design, supervise, and evaluate well completion, workover and well stimulation programmes.
  • Design and operate onshore and offshore oil and gas production facilities.
  • Carry out production optimization and well performance enhancement programmes.
  • Participate effectively in multidisciplinary oil and gas field review and field development teams.
  • Admission is open to qualified candidates who meet the admission requirements below.

This MSc programme will prepare you for the next steps in your career and you will learn from experts and industry leaders. 
The Institute’s faculty is made up of lecturers and resource persons from the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) and other universities in Nigeria, IFP School, France, and experts from the Energy industry in Nigeria and the diaspora.  Learning is supported by modern-day, state-of-the-art, and industry software. Students will participate in field and laboratory visits and reviews of field-case studies.  

The Institute offers a conducive learning environment, equipped with internet access, hard copy and virtual library, and hands-on training with student access to relevant information technology equipment.

The IPES hostel is of good standard with provisions that encourage and foster team spirit and collaboration amongst the students. 
IPES graduates have a 95% internship and employability rate in the oil and gas industry on graduation.

Programme Duration:
The programme is an intensive full-time study programme that runs for twelve (12) calendar months, non-stop. The programme cannot be truncated, and it is residential. Fees are non-refundable.

Award of Degree:
Successful students shall be awarded a joint Masters’ degree from the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria and IFP School, France.

Admission Requirements:
A candidate must have one of the following admission requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an NUC-accredited or internationally recognized Engineering Programme, with a minimum of second-class upper division.
    • Post HND (bachelor’s degree) from an NUC-accredited or internationally recognized Engineering programme with a minimum of second-class upper division is also accepted.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an NUC-accredited or internationally recognized Engineering or physical sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Geology, Geophysics, including Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) programme, with second-class lower division, and having a postgraduate diploma from IPES PGD programme or any other PGD programme in Petroleum Engineering.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an NUC accredited or internationally recognized Engineering programme with second-class lower division, having three (3) years of relevant work experience in the Oil and Gas industry

Application:
Application is online.
A non-refundable fee of fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000) only will be required to be paid online to start the application process.
Names of short-listed candidates will be published on the IPES website.
The programme is tuition-paying and successfully admitted students shall be responsible for their tuition or seek for sponsorship.
